30 Self-Care Journal Prompts to Figure Out What Actually Refills You
You’ve heard “drink water, take a bath, set a boundary” about a thousand times. You’re still tired, and now you feel guilty about the bath you skipped.
Self-care gets a lot easier when you stop following someone else’s list and figure out what actually refills you. Journaling is one of the simplest ways to do that. Here are 30 self-care journal prompts to help you notice what you need, plus a few planners and workbooks if you’d like more structure.
How to use these prompts
Pick one prompt a day, or flip to whichever one matches your mood. Write for five minutes. Bullet points count. So does one honest sentence. There’s no gold star for filling the page.
Prompts for noticing what you need
- How am I actually feeling right now, in one word?
- What has drained me most this week?
- What gave me even a little bit of energy?
- When did I last feel rested, and what was different that day?
- What does my body need today that I’ve been ignoring?
- What am I carrying that isn’t mine to carry?
Prompts for rest that actually works

- What does rest look like for me, not for the internet?
- Do I recharge better alone, with people or outside?
- What small comfort could I give myself in the next hour?
- What could I take off my plate this week?
- What would a soft evening look like tonight?
- Which “relaxing” thing actually stresses me out?
Prompts for boundaries
- Where am I saying yes when I mean no?
- Who or what gets more of my energy than they give back?
- What’s one boundary I could practice saying out loud?
- What do I need to hear permission for?
- What would I do differently if I didn’t feel guilty?
- How can I say no kindly and clearly?
Prompts for resilience
- What’s a hard thing I’ve already gotten through?
- What helped me then that could help me now?
- What’s within my control today, and what isn’t?
- Who can I lean on when things get heavy?
- What’s one small next step, not the whole staircase?
- What would I tell a friend in my situation?
Prompts for mindful moments
- What can I see, hear and feel right now?
- What did I enjoy today that I almost didn’t notice?
- What am I grateful for that’s easy to forget?
- What does my ideal ordinary day look like?
- What do I want more of next month?
- What is one kind thing I can do for myself tomorrow?
Journaling is a lovely support. If you’re struggling in a way that feels bigger than a notebook, please reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional.
