Spell Jars for Beginners: How to Make Your First Spell Jar (With Pantry Ingredients)
Spell jars are the gateway craft of witchcraft. You need a jar, a few things from your spice cabinet, and an intention. No altar, no ritual dagger, no moon phase you missed three weeks ago.
They’re also wildly easy to overcomplicate. Here’s how to make your first spell jar the simple way, what to put in it, and how to make jars for specific things like a job interview or a new home.
What a spell jar actually is
A spell jar (also called a witch bottle or charm jar) is a small container filled with ingredients chosen for one intention, then sealed so the spell keeps working while it sits on your shelf, in your car, or tucked in a drawer.
Old witch bottles from Britain were mostly about protection, and some of the ones dug up from under hearths and doorways are a few hundred years old. Modern spell jars cover pretty much any goal, from money to sleep.
How to make your first spell jar
1. Pick one intention
One jar, one job. “Protect my home” works. “Protect my home, find me love, fix my credit and get my sister to call me” is how you end up with a jar full of confused oregano.
Write your intention as one short sentence, like “My home is safe and peaceful.”
2. Choose a jar you’ll actually keep
Small cork jars, baby food jars, old spice jars and tiny mason jars all work. Wash it and dry it completely, since damp herbs get moldy and nobody wants to manifest that.
3. Raid the pantry

You almost certainly own enough ingredients right now. A few beginner staples:
- Salt for protection and cleansing
- Rice for abundance and money
- Cinnamon for success and a little speed
- Bay leaves for wishes (write on them)
- Rosemary for protection and clarity
- Dried lavender for calm and sleep
- Sugar or honey for sweetening a situation
- Black pepper for banishing and keeping trouble away
Three to five ingredients is plenty. Extra ingredients mostly make it crunchier.
4. Layer it with intention
Add each ingredient one at a time and say what it’s for as it goes in. “Salt to keep this home safe. Rosemary to clear what doesn’t belong.” You can tuck in a small slip of paper with your intention, too.
5. Seal it
Cork it, cap it, or seal it with wax from a candle. If you use candle wax, drip it slowly over a heatproof plate, keep the flame away from dried herbs, and never leave a burning candle alone.
6. Give it a home
Put protection jars near your front door, money jars near where you pay bills or work, and calm jars by your bed. Then leave it alone and let it work. Shaking it gently when you walk past is a nice way to “recharge” it.
Spell jars for specific situations

This is where spell jars get fun. A general money jar is nice. A jar for the night before your job interview is better, because it’s about your actual life. Some ideas:
- A new home protection jar by the front door the day you move in
- A glovebox jar for the car with salt, rosemary and a small key
- A gossip and envy jar for a workplace with a lot of side-eye
- A debt freedom jar next to your budget or bill pile
- A sleep jar with lavender and chamomile on your nightstand
- A courage jar for a hard conversation or a first day somewhere new
